As part of the “Accountability for Public Services” project, Improve Your Society Organization organized a community hearing session on June 22, 2026, in Taiz to discuss the reality of water and sanitation services in Al-Mudhaffar District. The session was attended by Abdulmoula Ahmed, Deputy Director of Projects at the Water and Sanitation Corporation, and Tareq Al-Fahidi, Head of the Services Committee in Al-Mudhaffar District, along with 30 participants representing community leaders, civil society activists, media professionals, and local organizations, as well as officials from the Local Water and Sanitation Corporation and the local authority.
The youth monitoring team presented the findings of a field monitoring report conducted between January and April 2026, which revealed persistent challenges such as weak water pumping and inequitable distribution among neighborhoods, deteriorating water and sanitation networks, continued issuance of consumption bills despite irregular service delivery, and worsening water shortages due to limited production sources and stalled projects.
Participants discussed the suffering of high-altitude neighborhoods with poor water access. Officials explained that limited sources, network violations, and illegal connections are major obstacles, noting that the central well solar project is nearing completion. The discussions also addressed sewage overflow in some areas due to aging infrastructure, and concerns over billing practices, with the Corporation emphasizing that installing meters is key to ensuring fair collection.
The session highlighted structural challenges affecting service sustainability, including limited water sources, deteriorating infrastructure, funding shortages, network violations, stalled projects, and weak community participation in protecting networks and rationalizing consumption.
Recommendations included accelerating stalled projects and mobilizing necessary funding, adopting sustainable solutions to improve supply in high-altitude areas and ensure fair distribution, rehabilitating and expanding networks with priority to the most affected neighborhoods, strengthening coordination between the Corporation, local authorities, and communities, forming a joint committee to follow up on recommendations, raising community awareness to protect networks and report leaks, improving billing and meter monitoring systems, and exploring ways to reduce the high costs of water transported by tankers.
The session provided a platform for direct dialogue between the local community and relevant authorities, contributing to greater transparency and social accountability, and reflecting the commitment of Improve Your Society Organization to support efforts to improve public services and empower citizens in monitoring service quality.
